Chapter 1: THE VILLAGE

In a cozy village, near a gentle hillside, overlooking the quiet ocean, one little family was getting ready for bed.

A soft breeze blew into the kitchen, where The MomThe Mom and The DadThe Dad scrubbed the dishes from supper. They rinsed and dried the dishes, and then put them away in the cupboard.

The ChildThe Child played with her toys. There were so many toys that they covered the floor… there were cowboys and pirates and mummies and astronauts. And don’t forget the monsters and aliens.

But now it was time for bed.

β€œOkay, put away your toys,” said The MomThe Mom. She walked over to The ChildThe Child and put her hands on The ChildThe Child’s shoulders. β€œLet’s go… It’s time to get sleepy.”

β€œBut I’m not sleepy,” said The ChildThe Child. β€œI know,” said The MomThe Mom. β€œBut you will be once you are in bed.”

Together, they put away the toys in a big box in the corner of the living room. Then they held hands and walked up the stairs. The ChildThe Child stopped at the first door to say goodnight to The GrandpaThe Grandpa, and at the second door to brush her teeth. Then they continued to the end of the hallway and entered the smallest bedroom.

The ChildThe Child laid down in bed and looked out the window at the night sky. It was a clear night and bright stars speckled the expanse of dark sky.

β€œDoes anyone live out there?” asked The ChildThe Child, pointing to the sky. β€œNo, I don’t think so,” said The MotherThe Mother.

β€œI wish I could have a friend who came from up in the sky,” said The ChildThe Child. And with that, she closed her eyes and drifted quickly to sleep.

In the room next door, The TeenagerThe Teenager heard his sister’s whispered wish. He realized that it could be lonely for her as a younger sister.

He closed his eyes again and tried to remember what it was like to be her age. It felt so long ago.

As her older brother, he felt a certain duty to protect his sister, but sometimes, he thought quietly to himself, he was a bit mean to her. After all, she could be so annoying.

He resolved to be kinder and more patient as he himself drifted off to sleep.

Outside, it was completely quiet, except for a recurring bird call, perhaps from a hungry owl. Everyone else was now asleep. But in just a few short hours, all of the families would be waking up with the sun, and The Village would spring to life again.
